How to Make Steak Tacos in a Slow Cooker

Aunt Lou here.

I found a great deal on some flat iron steaks! Half off baby!!! So you know this deal-lovin’ momma had to scoop a few of them up!Then I saw this recipe for Steak Tacos inGooseberry Patch’s Everyday Slow Cooker! and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them!

I told Michael that I was going to use them for some recipes when I bought them, but in his man-brain he blocked me out because all he could think was “GRILL GRILL GRILL!” So he was a little upset with me when I told him that I was going to use them for a recipe. Then he tried them…let’s just say he wasn’t upset with me anymore. 😉

Then there is Ryder. He has days where he will eat meat like nobody’s business. Then there are days when you would think he had never eaten it before. He will throw a fit if we try to serve it to him. Well, today was one of the latter days. He was so mad at us for putting meat on his taco…then he tried them. He LOVED it and even left some of the taco shell and cheese, but gobbled up all of the meat.

How do you keep taco meat from drying out in a crock pot? ›

Taco meat can dry out if you don't add extra water to the slow cooker. I suggest adding water before turning on the heat. This will keep the meat nice and moist, and serves the double purpose of helping the seasoning melt into the meat!

What is the best meat to cook in a crock pot? ›

Choose the right cut: Chuck roasts, short ribs, pork shoulders and lamb shanks (think fatty and tougher meats) become meltingly tender with the moist, low heat of a slow cooker. Leaner cuts like pork tenderloin tend to dry out. Likewise, dark meat chicken — thighs, drumsticks, etc.

Can you cook taco meat and keep in crockpot overnight? ›

If it finished cooking before you need it, turn the crock pot down to LOW or WARM until you're ready to eat. If you are planning ahead, you can cook the taco meat on LOW for 6-8 hours.

Can you put raw steak in a slow cooker? ›

If you want to, you can sear the edges of the meat in a skillet before starting it in the slow cooker for a little bit of added flavor. But if you prefer not to heat up your stove, you can just put the meat in the slow cooker raw.

What is the most tender meat for a crockpot? ›

Chuck roast is one of the more popular slow-cooker options because of how tender and flavorful it becomes after several hours of cooking on low.

What is the thickening agent for taco meat? ›

A typical 12-serving taco seasoning mix recipe uses about 1 ½ tablespoons of cornstarch. If you want to skip the cornstarch in your homemade seasoning to use it for other purposes, just sprinkle ⅓ to ½ teaspoon of cornstarch per pound of browned, spiced meat before adding ¾ cup of water and heat until thickened.

How long can you leave taco meat in a crock pot? ›

Transfer to a slow cooker / crockpot. Cook on low for 7 to 8 hours / high for 4 to 5 hours. (After cooking time is finished, the taco meat can hold on the warming function for up to 2 hours.)

Can you put uncooked ground beef in the crockpot? ›

Absolutely, which is why you should always adjust times and amounts as needed. Smaller amounts of slow cooker hamburger only need a few hours before they are done.

Do potatoes go on top or bottom of meat in Crockpot? ›

Slow cooker recipes have (obviously) long cook times, and it's the meat—not the carrots—that benefit from it. By placing the protein at the bottom (closest to the heating element), and vegetables at the top, you can keep your plant parts a little more toothsome, while ensuring your meat is fall-apart tender.

What is the difference between a slow cooker and a crock pot? ›

They are essentially two terms for the same thing. Crock Pot is just a trademarked name for a certain brand of slow cooker that uses a crockery insert as a cooking vessel. Agree with most of the answers. “Crock Pot” is a brand name, and the brand name of the first popular slow cooker.

What is the difference between a slow cooker and a crock pot slow cooker? ›

The pot of the slow cooker usually sits on a base that houses the heating element on the bottom, while Crockpots have their pots inside of a container (or crock) and get heating from all sides. Therefore, slow cookers heat up slower than crockpots, with the heat level higher on the bottom of the pot.

How much taco meat do I need for 20 people? ›

Most people will eat about 1 to 2 ounces of meat per taco. For 20 people figure at least 70 to 80 tacos. That's about 10 pounds of meat roughly. People tend to fill tacos with solid meats like not ground beef or chicken with less meat fillings than ground meats.

Is it safe to eat cooked taco meat left out overnight? ›

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) food and safety basics states cooked food can be left at room temperature up to two hours. If the temperature outside (or inside your house) is 90°F or above, you should cut that time in half.

How far in advance can I make taco meat? ›

The taco meat can be made days ahead of time and then warmed when ready. You can also prep all of the toppings and store in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Now all you have to do is minutes worth of assembly then bake! FREEZER FRIENDLY.

What is the underrated cut of steak that's ideal for slow cooking? ›

Under blade steak maintains its shape even when slow-cooked

But unlike most steak cuts, the under blade takes just as well to slow-cooking — this cut will maintain its integrity through the low and slow cooking process, per The Spruce Eats. Also known as a chuck flat, according to Beef.

What is best cut of beef for slow cooked stew? ›

Chuck is one of the leaner types of beef, making it perfect for stews because it melts into delicious pieces as it cooks. A chuck roast has a large amount of connective tissue, which allows it to retain its moisture during the cooking process.

Can you overcook steak in a slow cooker? ›

If you cook meat at too high of a temperature in your slow cooker, you're likely to overcook it. When you cook your food slowly at a lower temperature, you unlock the magic of slow cooking.

What type of meat cut requires long and slow cooking temperature? ›
